My image is freedom. It is not the freedom of expression but rather an expression of freedom. My work chronicles the journey of Pam becoming Pammm, a fully shaved and sexually enlightened human being and celebrates her discovery that she was not born deformed but identical to everyone else. It is about dropping the veil to uncover what was hidden and unaddressed for decades, if not centuries. It is about her pudendum, which ironically comes from the Latin root pudere, which means “to be ashamed” or “to feel shame”. My work attempts to devalue porn by adopting Takashi Murakami’s definition/classification of sex in a Superflat society where there is no distinction between naughty/wrong/evil sex and goody/right/holy sex. “It is all sex. It is all superflat.” After shaving my “pudendum” I felt a strange sense of freedom. Without the hair it was no longer mysteriously dark and deep. It became a cartoon: flat, cute and approachable. The personal became political. The autobiographical figures in my paintings are colorful caricatures that reside in Toonsville or the Garden of Eden (which ever you prefer) – a “shameless” place where one’s head can fall off and be easily reattached, where obstacles are hopelessly harmless and where raw sex resembles bubblegum. I employ irony and satire to arouse and humor the mind with images that contradict and challenge. My images toy with our hypocrisies, our denials and our deepest desires. They are unembellished and beautifully honest. When viewing my work we feel like we have walked into an unlocked but occupied bathroom. We jump around as if we are completely embarrassed even if we are not. We giggle. We squirm. We slam the door shut. We take a deep breath as we walk away laughing for behaving so childishly.
